We find the above presentation that the Food Supplements/Wellness Category seems to dominate the list, followed by the Jewelry/Fashion Category. But the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) of the US cited in its website (accessed 3/23/2014) that
"not all of these products live up to the advertising claims that they can help people lose weight, combat disease, and improve their cognitive abilities." The FTC further said that "Americans spend billions of dollars every year on supplements, foods and devices in hopes of improving their health and fitness....With regard to the supplement industry, which reported an estimated $25 billion in sales in 2009 – a six percent increase over the previous year – market analysts suggest that the downturn in the economy has led to increased spending on these products, as consumers attempt to manage their own healthcare and avoid expensive doctor visits and prescription medications. All too often, the health claims made for these products are false or unproven. Over the last decade, the FTC has filed one hundred and twenty cases challenging health claims made for supplements. Meanwhile, in recent years there has been a trend in food advertising toward making unproven claims that eating certain foods can improve health and even reduce the risk of serious illnesses such as prostate cancer and heart disease."
As direct sellers, we need to understand two things based of the above list. One is that we need to choose the best company that is offering the best product (I used GNLD products for over 12 years already--it works for me) and having the best marketing plan (yeah, very ideal: good product + good compensation plan!). Second, is that we need to be sensitive about products that are considered fast moving in the direct sales industry: first, Food Supplements/Wellness; second, Jewelry & Fashion; third, cosmetics and beauty/body care, and fourth, home care products.
Someone has said that "we need to go back to the traditional direct-selling products like cosmetics and beauty/body care, since shopping malls are now controlling the fashion (apparel, shoes) category." On the part of the owners of direct-selling companies, this is one thing they need to look into. But on our part as distributors of their products, we find direct-selling method of marketing to be more personalized, the one most important thing not offered in big malls. Hence, selling whether cosmetics, apparel or wellness products makes no difference in our experience. That is why the wellness and jewelry direct sales companies are mushrooming in the United States and in other countries such as the Philippines, Malaysia, and other ASEAN countries. Give the true direct seller any product and he/she will effectively market it. It is not the cosmetics or wellness category, rather it is the direct-sales company's ability to organize and make its sales force produce consistently.
All things being equal, we also believe that what is fast moving in the US (mentioned above: 1) Wellness; 2) Jewelry; 3) Cosmetics, etc) may not be true is other countries like the Philippines, which is proven to have a) fashion/shoes/apparel; b) cosmetics, body/beauty care; c) home care as fast moving compared with food supplements and wellness products. Of course, this is just my personal observation without any valid evidence to support such claim.
From the report of DSA (Direct Selling Association) of the US, of its Top 20 Largest Direct Sales Company-Members, we noticed that some in the list fall under "Various Category," or companies carrying products of different categories like Amway that is selling almost anything. Secondly, we find Mary Kay, Avon, etc. of the Cosmetics Category in the DSA list together with Herbalife, which is a Wellness Company.
In conclusion, we find, as already hinted above, that it is not so much of the product but of the company itself that commands what is the best product to sell in the direct sales industry. The following is the DSA's Top 20 largest company-members, which you can also find in this link.
